- Get somewhere safe first. If you're on a primary route or the M54, pull as far left as you can, put the hazards on, and get everyone out on the nearside and behind a barrier where one exists.
- Pin down your location. Junction numbers, a nearby unit name or a what3words reference all beat "somewhere on the A442" and save the fitter circling.
- Find the locking wheel nut key. It's usually in the glovebox, the boot well or with the spare. Tell us in advance if you can't lay hands on it.
- Clear the boot if the spare well is buried. Only matters on some vehicles, but it saves unloading shopping at the roadside.
- Leave room for the van. A gap of roughly a car's width alongside is enough to work in safely.
- Have the registration ready. It's the quickest route to the correct tyre size and specification.

Making Sense of the Numbers on Your Sidewall
That string of digits on the side of your tyre isn’t decoration, and knowing how to read it makes any conversation about replacements a great deal shorter. Take a typical marking like 225/45 R17 94W:
- 225 — the width across the tread in millimetres.
- 45 — the aspect ratio: sidewall height as a percentage of that width. Lower means a shallower, sportier sidewall.
- R17 — radial construction, on a 17-inch wheel.
- 94 — the load index, which converts to the maximum weight that tyre can carry.
- W — the speed rating. The letter matters more than people assume, particularly on anything performance-oriented.
Worth knowing as well: there’s a four-digit code stamped near the DOT marking giving the week and year the tyre was made. So 2422 means the twenty-fourth week of 2022. Rubber hardens with age whatever the mileage, which is why a barely-used tyre can still be past its best.
