Check Your Own Tread in Under a Minute
You don’t need a gauge or any real knowledge to work out whether a tyre is close to done. A 20p coin does the job, and it takes about as long as filling a kettle.
How it works: slot a 20p into one of the main tread grooves. If the outer band around the edge of the coin disappears completely, you’ve got a reasonable amount of tread left. If that band stays visible, you’re close to — or already at — the 1.6mm legal minimum and the tyre needs looking at properly.
Doing it properly takes a few extra seconds:
- Check at three points across the width — inner edge, middle, outer edge
- Then repeat at three positions around the tyre, rolling the car forward a little
- Do all four wheels, not just the fronts, which usually wear first on front-wheel drive
- Note anything uneven: one edge lower than the other, or a strip worn in the middle
- Look for cracking, cuts or bulges while you're crouched down anyway
- Check the pressures monthly too — cold weather drops them noticeably
That last point catches people out every autumn. Pressure falls as temperatures drop, and an underinflated tyre wears its shoulders away and uses more fuel doing it.

Not at the roadside, no. Alignment needs a fixed rig and a level surface to be worth anything, so it isn’t something that can be done properly from a van. What we will do is tell you if the wear pattern on your old tyres suggests it needs looking at — uneven shoulders are usually the giveaway — so you can book it locally before your new tyres wear the same way.
We don’t. New only, across every price bracket from budget to premium. Part-worns are legal to sell but the history behind them is impossible to verify, and there’s no way of knowing what a tyre has been through before it reaches you. If cost is the concern, our budget range is a better answer.
Our fitters carry extraction tools and it’s a situation they deal with fairly often, particularly on older vehicles or anything that’s spent winters on salted roads. Occasionally one simply won’t come out at the roadside, and if that happens you’ll be told plainly what your options are rather than being charged for a job we couldn’t finish.
